Song #16 Prayer of Jabez (1 Chronicles 4:10)

This is the 6th song on my “Words of Life” CD.

At the time I wrote this song, there was a book written about this prayer, and it really touched my heart powerfully; I hope the truth of this scripture touches you as well.

Lyrics:

“Oh that You would bless me and enlarge my territory, let Your hand be with me and keep me from harm so that I may be free from pain.

And God granted his request.”

From the beginning of the book of 1 Chronicles there are lists of individual’s names by their tribal groupings. The tribes of Simeon, Reuben, Judah, etc.; the families of Israel. Right in the midst of these lists is the story of Jabez, which is told in two short verses, then the lists of names continue on.

As strange as the placement of this story may seem, it shows us a picture of the tenderness of God’s heart toward those who have suffered, and who still call upon Him for help. Jabez was born into pain, but in his pain, he still felt he could call upon God, not just to help him, but to bless him and enlarge his influence. Jabez lived in an era where the physically strong had all the advantages, and those less fortunate got the left overs. But Jabez had cultivated a relationship with God, and God helped him overcome his disadvantages. Jabez prayed: bless me, enlarge my holdings, be with me, relieve my pain. I especially like the last part..”And God granted his request.”

Today, you may feel buried in obscurity, but if you will call upon the Lord, there is no telling what He might do to turn your situation around.

Go ahead…try it…He may just grant your request.

Blessings,

Wes
